Livestock farmers should stock feed ahead of the project dry spell that according to the Ministry of Water and Environment starts this month of June 2026.
While releasing the June July August weather forecast last week, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Water and Environment Alfred Okot Okidi said that weather in the three months will be dry especially in Western Parts of the country, Parts of eastern like Busoga and northern Bukedi region.
Okidi added that for the northern and some eastern parts of the country, the rains from March April May will continue.
Some of the factors that will influence the dry period according to Okidi are current sea surface temperatures over the equatorial Central and Eastern Pacific Ocean that are expected to suppress the rains over the three months.
Apart from feeds, Okidi advised farmers next or who own dams to desilt them now that the rains are getting done so they can be ready for the next rains in addition to spraying livestock with relevant treatments that brought about different parasites including ticks among others.
He added that fish farmers should instead harvest most of the fish and preserve them because there will be reduced water in the fish ponds. While crop farmers should go for drought tolerant crops and also those that are early maturing so as to make use of the moisture in the soil,Okidi added.
Explaining the forecast at the Media Center last week, Okidi said overall, near normal rains with incidents of increased temperatures.
